The Yamaha G-series (G16, G22, G29/The Drive and related models) built Yamaha's reputation for reliable, smooth-running golf buggies. This guide covers the routine maintenance that keeps a G-series going, in both electric and petrol forms.
Yamaha's petrol G-series engines are known for quiet, efficient running; the electric models use a conventional battery system. Regular oil and filter care (petrol) or battery care (electric), plus the usual cleaning and tyres, is most of the job.
We service, repair and source parts for the Yamaha G-series and any other make and model.

How you look after the batteries makes the biggest difference to an electric buggy's life. If you have a lithium (LiFePO4) pack it's virtually maintenance-free – charge when convenient, partial charges are fine. For lead-acid batteries: charge after every use, avoid deep discharges, keep the water above the plates (top up with distilled water after charging), keep the tops clean, and always charge in a well-ventilated space away from sparks or flames.
Check pressures regularly and take care inflating – these small tyres fill fast and over-inflate easily. Keep pressures even across the buggy for stable handling.
Many Yamaha G-Series owners upgrade from lead-acid to a lithium pack for lighter weight, faster charging and near zero maintenance. We carry out lithium conversions – see our Lithium Battery Upgrades page.
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Won't start (petrol) | Fuel, spark plug or ignition fault | Check fuel and spark plug; have ignition checked if needed. |
| Vehicle will not move (electric) | Key off / no direction, discharged batteries | Check key, direction and charge. |
| Rough running (petrol) | Dirty air filter or fouled plug | Clean/replace the air filter and inspect the spark plug. |
